VNDL:  Describe your work/process:

PS:  I’m predominately a portrait photographer.  I’ve also worked as director / director of photography on some music videos and commercials.  I like to mix light sources, and i’m drawn towards quite a clean aesthetic with strong lines.

What have you been up to recently? (trips, projects, work?)

I’ve been shooting more for my Ermine St project and developing some other street portrait ideas.  I’m currently editing a photo shoot I did with Joe Mount from Metronomy for a forthcoming magazine cover.  I’m looking ahead to shooting press pictures and a music video for Rainer http://www.thisisrainer.com/ and finishing off a short film I shot with the director Ben Gutteridge.  I’m also working on a script for a short film which also turns out to be an excellent opportunity to visit the pub.

Favorite Camera? (weapon of choice)

I currently shoot with a 5dMKIII and (normally) 50mm & 85mm lenses.  I would like to move up to medium format digital when the bank balance allows.

Advice to other creative’s/aspiring artists:

Get involved in as many projects as possible, be generous with your time.  Don’t waste too much time thinking, sometimes it’s ok to create first and figure out what its means after.

What are you currently listening to/reading/ watching?

Listening to Rainer – https://soundcloud.com/thisisrainer (re)Reading The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore and Kevin O’Neil.  It’s so dense and full of references it blows my mind, sending it in multiple directions at once.  Watching, I’m an avid cinema goer, so this year has started with new films from the Coen Bros, Steve McQueen and David O. Russell.  I’m finally sitting down to watch Breaking Bad, now I know it actually has an ending I’ll be able to enjoy it.  I’m not particularly interested in narratives that could just potentially go on for ever.  It’s not that I NEED closure i just don’t want to be strung along.  I also watch a lot of stuff on Mubi – https://uk.mubi.com/

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

Hopefully shooting bigger and better projects

Who is or where does your inspiration come from? Any emerging artists to watch out for?:

For film work, the director Dan Sully produces consistently brilliant work, also the DOP Ben Fordesman’s stuff is next level – https://vimeo.com/85523671 Photography-wise i’m loving Ben Patio http://www.benpatio.com/ Chris Dorley-Brown http://www.modrex.com/ Hannes Casper http://www.hannescaspar.com/ but there’s almost too many to mention, I store some ideas at my pinterest page – http://www.pinterest.com/philsharp/
