VNDL:  Describe your work/process

JM:  I have been working on documenting the Portuguese skate scene for the last 6 years and been publishing on Portuguese and European skateboarding magazines.

Shooting skateboarding I usually use digital because film is to expensive to shoot skate tricks aldo once in a while I take a change a spend one or two rolls of film.

But all my personal and lifestyle photos I use film for the simple thing that I like it a lot more than digital.

I learn to appreciate working slowly witch I think is the best way to achieve the best results, every time im anxious about some project it becomes the opposite of what I expected to be.

What have you been up to recently? (trips, projects, work?)

Recently im trying to do more fashion and lifestyle works also with film, and also I have been working on a new personal project witch I expect to be complete near the next summer, work that evolves some very small sand islands were I live in south Portugal, which I expect so show the same atmosphere that I feel of this magical places, were I have learn to surf and get to know the  beautiful aspect of the ocean.

Advice to other creative’s/aspiring artists

My best advice is don’t be hurry to get on photography, do it slowly and learn to appreciate it, also read and see others works on paper don’t get hours seeing shity stuff on the social networks.

Respect the older and try to learn with them instead of making copies of their work.

Get a film camera you will love it .

What are you currently listening to/reading/ watching?

I have been listening some Kyuss for releasing some anger and on the other side I like to listen some Warren Ellis witch it amazing stuff.

As for watching I have seen the movie “Only god Forgives” from Nicolas Winding Refn that as amazing photography work, you should see it.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I really cant tell, but I can tell you were I wish to be, living with the girls of my dreams ( you know who you are) and still making pictures of all the things I love.

But once Portugal is a Country of corruption and leading to a deep crisis I star do doubt about it.

Who is or where does your inspiration come from? Any emerging artists to watch out for?

I think I learn to get inspired by guys like  Eric Antoine and Sem rubio, but also I love the work of Scott Pommier.

As for emerging artists I think Czar  Kristoff  wich i met on the web is going to be even better than what he is now, with a very unique style.

João Mascarenhas is a photographer from Portugal
