Words- Erin Shea

A line was already formed outside the Mercury Lounge on Tuesday when I arrived 15 minutes before doors opened. Apparently the boys of Hey Monea! had made good impressions on people who’ve seen them before.

I hung around the the stage area before the show and began talking to a girl who came to the show specifically for this band. This is impressive for the opening band at a $10 show on a Tuesday night.

The one word to describe the Ohio-based band, made up of brothers Dan Monea and Nate Monea, joined by Adam Orin and Ryan Doyle, is charming. They play adorable love songs that girls want to hear [and desperately wish were about them], they’re handsome and wholesome midwestern boys who are okay to take home to mom. What more could a girl want?

Their love-inspired, pop-rock songs reminded me a bit of Gavin DeGraw – in a good way. In between songs, their lead singer Dan switched from the guitar to the piano to a melodica [which apparently belongs to the manager’s daughter], while the guitarist Nate played a mandolin for a song. This is all being done while barefoot. They don’t wear shoes because, well, fuck shoes.

In between songs they welcomed first timers, said the word “y’all” and mentioned that they had just signed to Hard Rock Records.

They ended their set with Dan back on the piano and on the stage solo singing “Cheap Souvenirs,” a song about buying a girl a milkshake and cheap souvenirs, hopefully not in Times Square.

Set list:

When we kiss

Ohio Lullaby

Six Day War

Never gonna take you back

Cheap Souvenirs
