VNDL: What have you been up to recently (trips, projects, work)? CD: Well recently I moved to New York City and its been quite the experience so far, I have a few trips planned out this year but I’ll be in Canada in the next couple months working and making a trip to Paris this year as well so it’s definitely an exciting time for me. Favorite Quote? Hmmm my favorite quote, I don’t think I have one because there are so many good ones out there that apply to you a different momemts in your life but a good one that has always stuck with me comes from one of my favorite directors Woody Allen.. he said “If you’re not failing every now and again, it’s a sign you’re not doing anything very innovative”. Advice to other creatives/aspiring artists. My advice to other artist out there is be aggressive, stay hungry, and network like crazy!. Take the initiative, every ounce of success or recognition I have achieved has only come from me being proactive. Don’t wait for people to discover your work, email those creative directors, stand outside these magazines office buildings, you do whatever you have to to make these people see your talent. What are you currently listening to/reading/watching? Well I listen to everything, I’m really just a huge music lover in general, good music is good music but lately I’ve been listening to a lot more Jazz. I would say even more than usually which is already a lot, I found this amazing italian Jazz singer named Domenico Modugno who is absolutely brilliant. You can here is music blasting out of my apartment, especially on the weekends. He really came to promience during the 1950’s, I would have loved to photograph him. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? Hopefully in the next 5 years I’ll be in a position where I can step back more from photography and focus more on creative directing for various brands and magazines. I find that extremely engaging and exciting, I would liken it to a Conductor of an orchestra, your job is to see the vision realized. Sometime further down the line I would love venture future into the filming industry, perhaps becoming a director of photography one would do. If I could achieve any of those two I would die a happy man. Any emerging artists to watch out for? Where does my inspiration come from? Well, it comes from everywhere. The people I see, the movies I watch, the music I listen to. I would say Helmut Newton inspires my work a lot as does Hedi Slimaine both of them I hold in high regards. One for his revolutionary approach, the other for his attention to detail. Also, Annie Leibovitz she is one of the most talented storytellers when it comes to her photos that we will possibly ever see. Some people that are definitely worth watching in my opinion would be Ira Chernova, not quite sure how she does it but her photos are very souful, Rachel Roze is another amazing talent, the way she see’s the world is so interesting and complex. She has away of just capturing “life” in all its rawness, so watch out for both these women. Cameron Davis is a photographer based out of Brooklyn, NY.
