VNDL:  Describe your work/proces?

MK:  Like Aaron Siskind, Paul Strand, Irving Penn and many other photographers before me, I have turned my camera to city streetscapes and urban abstractions.  While documenting graffiti, street grids, and reflections, I focus on the details of nature and architecture. Shooting with film and printing traditionally in a darkroom, I present these captured images as flat surfaces to create a new view, catching this metropolis in a pure visual form.

What have you been up to recently?(trips, projects, work?)

I’m in the process of making a photo book of my 13 summers living in Provincetown, MA, as a straight man. During these years I photographed day to day life of the local community and their lifestyles.  Part of this book is my locally known portraits of these colorful characters of the Lower Cape accompanied by documentary style photographs of day to day life.

I have collected a large body of work and my vision for this book is clear however, I am currently working on the format and the flow of the book.  The portraits and documentation collected are being presented in a way to tell a story of my experiences.

I’m also working on mixed media pieces for a solo exhibition this Spring (N. Hampton, MA, Bang-Bang body arts) and Summer (Provincetwon, MA, DeLuca Gallery).  In this work I am incorporating objects found on the street (tape, stickers, wrappers, etc.) into my previously printed photographs and Polaroids in order to create a more interesting combination with thoughtful precision and spontaneous chaos for the viewer.

Who is or where does your inspiration come from?

My inspiration comes from the never ending canvas of the streets as well as the creative community I’m around.  Graffiti & street art are always changing our views and landscapes and question us every day we step-out.

-16 -17 Any emerging artists to watch out for?

Anything coming out of Fuse gallery (LES) & Parlor Gallery (Asbury Park, NJ).  These galleries keep it real and are inspiring. -18Michael Koehler is a photographer living and working in NYC
