VNDL:  Describe your work/process.

MH:  My work is really pretty intuitive, most often I am basing my work off my experience. The process for me really comes from the doing, and not so much thinking.

I listen see where the journey takes me. I have some upcoming projects in mind that are more focused and involve more research.

What have you been up to recently? (trips, projects, work?)

I just finished wrapping a project I shot in Iceland in July while I was an artist in residence at a artist residency called Baer in the north fjords. I want to go back.

I am hoping to go to India this March for a project I have wanted to shoot a portrait project I have wanted to do for a long time.

What are you currently listening to/reading/ watching?

Listening lately to lots of roots reggae, joey bada$$, kurt vile, jazz, and mantra music. I have been reading mostly yogic philosophy, history, and science stuff, I haven’t read any fiction in a year or so – I should. Lately I have been watching lots of movies from the 70’s, most movies suck now, the last two were Serpico with Al Pachino and The Boarder with Jack Nicolson. I am always watching documentaries, the last one I saw was Jiro Dreams of Sushi, its about a 85 year old Sushi master who owns a small restaurant in a train station that is booked a year in advance, he has perfected his craft beyond what anyone thought possible. It’s a great movie for anyone who is involved in a craft of any kind. It was inspiring.

Where do you see yourself in 5 years? –

I see myself continuing personal projects, publishing books, possibly teaching, refining my vision… who knows?

Who is or where does your inspiration come from? Any emerging artists to watch out for?

As completely cliché as it sounds, my inspiration comes from being my true self, by peeling back the layers of everything that isn’t me. I think if you come from your soul, go deep into that unified field, everything is there, I would say that’s where creativity resides. But obviously I am also completely influenced by art, photography and music. I am a total visual junky; I look at tons of different photography and listen to a wide variety of music. I guess my inspiration comes from all my earliest childhood memories, all the places I get to travel to and all my experiences. There are so many great emerging photographers and photographers its hard to name them all, some of my peers work I enjoy include, Wayne Lawrence, Thomas Prior, Steven Brahms, Noel Camardo the list goes on…
