VNDL: Describe your work/process.

NS: I photograph life: the people, places, and things existing in the world. My work could be described as carefree and laid-back, while still remaining outgoing and full of energy. I try to let truth and reality shine through as much as possible in my work, which lends to the loose or point-of-view compositions in some of my images.

What have you been up to recently (trips, projects, work)?

I actually just got back from NYC. I went with a few close friends to get away for the weekend and build the portfolio a bit…what a great city. I also took an unexpected trip to a place called Ohiopyle in Pennsylvania where I managed to snag some pretty fun images. As far as projects go, I’ve got nothing concrete lined up, but I am doing some sketching for future shoots. I’m hoping to make 2013 a much more solid year for my work than 2012. So far, I’ve made some great friends and connections as well as landed a pretty cool publication in a french magazine. (Stay tuned for that!).

Favorite Quote?

It’s a long one.
“So many people live within unhappy circumstances and yet will not take the initiative to change their situation because they are conditioned to a life of security, conformity, and conservatism, all of which may appear to give one peace of mind, but in reality nothing is more damaging to the adventurous spirit within a man than a secure future. The very basic core of a man’s living spirit is his passion for adventure. The joy of life comes from our encounters with new experiences and hence there is no greater joy than to have an endlessly changing horizon, for each day to have a new and different sun.” – Christopher McCandless

Advice to other creatives/aspiring artists?

Keep pushing on, no matter what the critics say.

What are you currently listening to/reading/watching?

I’ve been listening to a ton of different bands lately, Youth Lagoon, Gem Club, and Youngblood Hawke to name a few. I’m in search of some new reads, so if anyone has some recommendations, hit me! I’m also real into Duck Dynasty lately…

Where do you see yourself in 5 years?

I was actually asked this recently and it really got me thinking. Five years is truly a journey; I’ve gone through such a transformation in those years, so it’s hard to say where the next five will lead me. I’m hoping somewhere awesome and exciting.

Who is or where does your inspiration come from? Any emerging artists to watch out for?

I’m so blessed to be surrounded by such an inspiring community of creatives. I’m even more blessed to call so many of them friends. My inspiration comes from life and everything it entails. Friends, music, the arts…there is so much beauty in everything around us, you just have to look close enough. For emerging artists, keep an eye on Nick Suarez. Nick is a great friend of mine who recently moved to NYC, and though his work is already pretty established, he’s looking to take The Big Apple by storm.
