Franey Miller vndl February 15, 2013 Interview, Photography 1 Comment VNDL: Describe your work/process? FM: I want my style of photography to come across as editorial and eccentric, with a touch of femininity. I really love natural locations, and my work mainly consists of girls in pretty clothes. Every so often a male makes his way into my work, but I really like the female body and all of the clothing options there are in fashion for girls. I shoot with film but I’m learning digital. I love the look of film, especially the tones and how I don’t have to edit the film. I think digital should be taken as a totally different medium from film, and that’s why I like it, too. What have you been up to recently? (trips, projects, work?) Recently I’ve been juggling my time with taking photos, going to school, frequent trips to Chicago and New York, hanging out with my lovely boyfriend, Ryan, seeing my friends sometimes, and thrift store shopping. Most of my shoots up to now are styled by my thrifting finds; I have a massive amount of clothing that is too big to fit in my closet. I have a lot of unreleased work that I’m saving for publication, too. I’ve been doing a lot of portfolio shoots and getting in contact with the right people before my move to New York City. Favorite Quote? My favorite quote has to be “The best thing about a picture is that it never changes, even when the people in it do.” – Andy Warhol. I’ve had a lot of people come and go in my life, and nostalgia is a melancholy process that photos really do help with in that aspect of my being. Advice to other creative’s/aspiring artists? My advice to other creative people is to never stop creating. Even if you want to stop doing your art, don’t, because no one remembers the person who gave up. All the time I’m bothered by other people being better than me, because no one wants to be second best. Another thing I deal with a lot is rejection, and if you get rejected, just keep going. Not everything will work out in your favor but I do believe in karma and that the bad has to happen for the existence of the good. What are you currently listening to/reading/ watching? I’m currently listening to a lot of Crystal Castles, Grimes, and Elliott Smith. I’m reading a bunch of W and VOGUE, and I am obsessed with the X-Files. Scully and Mulder are so attractive and if I had the chance to, I’d definitely photograph them. Where do you see yourself in 5 years? In 5 years I see myself living in New York City with Ryan and two cats, being happy, working for Vogue or another famous magazine, and eating really healthily. I really love healthy, organic food and one of my goals is to learn to cook healthy meals. Who is or where does your inspiration come from? Any emerging artists to watch out for? My inspiration comes from these weird fits that I have, usually while listening to music, I get really excited and inspired and I just tear at my notebook with new ideas. Other things that inspire me are hot air balloons, fancy cheeses, fluffy kittens, the way Ryan looks at me, raspberries and peaches in the summertime, cool grass, and just enough coffee in a porcelain mug. I’m also inspired by a lot of other fashion photographers, for example, Marie Zucker, Tim Walker, Marie Hochhaus, Mariam Sitchinava, and Ryan McGinley.
